Told from the perspective of a delicate young German soldier (Lew Ayres) through WWI, recruited by a hawkish professor advocating "glory for the fatherland." The young soldier arrives underneath the protecting wing of an outdated veteran (Louis Wolheim) who teaches him how to survive the horrors of war.
