In 1664, not able to summon any significant resistance, Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam to English troops, led by Colonel Richard Nicolls, with no bloodshed. In 1664, New York was named in honor of the Duke of York, who would turn out to be King James II of England. Broadway, from 159th Street to 218th Street in Upper Manhattan, is named Juan Rodriguez Way in his honor.
