This afterwards motivated one of Asimov's small tales, "Spell My Name with an S". Many of his brief stories mention or quotation Gilbert and Sullivan. His early career, dominated by science fiction, started with short tales in 1939 and novels in 1950. This lasted right until about 1958, all but ending immediately after publication of The Naked Sun (1957).
